Anointed to Live Rightly

Pastor Dan Johnson

CRIPTURE

But to the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever.
You rule with a scepter of justice.
You love justice and hate evil.
Therefore, O God, your God has anointed you,
pouring out the oil of joy on you more than on anyone else.”

Hebrews 1: 8-9

BSERVATION

The author of Hebrews quotes Psalms 45: 6-7 with God speaking about His Son, Jesus. Because the Son loves righteousness and hates lawlessness, God anoints Him above everyone else. It is part of the opening of Hebrews that illustrates that Jesus is God and that He is exalted over all others.

There is something to be learned here about the anointing that God promises to anyone who will love righteousness and hate evil. Though this scripture is specifically talking about the Son of God, there is secondary application for the believer who would seek to be used by God. The anointing has to do with God’s presence and power in an individual’s life. It is also true that we can forfeit the anointing of God’s Spirit if we tolerate evil or compromise our integrity. Years ago, I remember one of our church leaders teaching on walking in the power of an ungrieved Spirit. There is something of His power and anointing that is released in our lives when we walk in careful obedience to God.

PPLICATION

I am so aware of the privilege of living in God’s presence and being a visible expression of Jesus to the people I come in contact with. I want so much to move in all of the anointing that God has made available to me. I know I can embrace and experience the power of the Holy Spirit as I am filled with the Spirit and walk in the Spirit. This requires sensitivity to His voice and direction in my life.

I know that the anointing is tied to a life of prayer, a life of being filled with the Holy Spirit and a life of obedience and service to the King. I set my heart to live for Him wholeheartedly so that I will experience the full measure of His Spirit and anointing in my life.

RAYER

Thank You, Father God, for making your anointing and power available to me through your Holy Spirit. Lord Jesus, come fill me with your Spirit afresh and anew so that I will be equipped and anointed to accomplish every good work that you have for me to do. I set my heart to discern between good and evil and choose to go your way whenever there is the temptation to stray and go my own way.
