True Rest is Found in Obedience to God

Pastor Dan Johnson

CRIPTURE

There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.

Hebrews 4:9-11

BSERVATION

The Sabbath-rest for the people of God comes from a life of dedication and obedience to God’s will. The writer states that the person who enters God’s rest is one who rests from his own work. With the following verse’s reference to making every effort to enter that rest, and not giving in to disobedience, it is clear that the Holy Spirit is inspiring the writer to show that the place of true rest is only found in faithfully fulfilling the will of God in our lives through careful obedience.

PPLICATION

I am moved to be a person who obeys the Lord fully because there is a dimension of peace and rest that is only available when I know that I have pleased Him and carried out His will for my life. There are many seemingly ‘little things’ that I know I can do in response to the Holy Spirit’s direction in my life. It’s when I obey even in the little things that God will trust me to carry out some of the bigger things in life.

Summer time is a time of great fun, hard work and hopefully some vacation time. But true rest is found in being properly aligned with the Lord and closely following His will for my life.

RAYER

Lord Jesus I am thankful for the rest that You have made available to me. Help me to enter into that rest each day as I do your will and please our Heavenly Father. Fill me with your Spirit so that I will have the power to execute your will in everything You have called me to do today. Thank You for the rest I can experience as I trust in your grace and mercy toward me.
