Learning Obedience Involves Suffering

Pastor Dan Johnson

CRIPTURE

So even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.

Hebrews 5:8-9

BSERVATION

Jesus led the way in how we are to obey the Heavenly Father. He laid his life down for us, and this is to inspire us to lay our lives down for Jesus and others. In the same way that Jesus humbled himself to this trial of endurance and suffering, we are called to embrace a life of obedience that will almost always involve suffering and surrender of self in some way.

Every time there is the need to respond in obedience, we must be willing to surrender to self and see how we can discern the benefits of obedience to God’s will and understand the blessing that will come as we obey. Jesus is the source of salvation for everyone, but we can through obedience be ministers of reconciliation and vessels that God can use to save many.

PPLICATION

Obedience is a daily challenge. I am so touched by how Jesus humbled himself all the way to the cross. It is hard to imagine everything He went through on my behalf. I am inspired today to learn obedience and realize that this involves personal sacrifice and sometimes suffering. I want to please my Lord and remember that God will truly bless the heart who obeys willingly.

One point of obedience that I know God wants me to be faithful in is to pray faithfully for His people and for the individuals that He brings to my mind through the day. I am available to the Holy Spirit to pray and set in to motion God's life and blessings for the people I pray for.

RAYER

Thank you Heavenly Father for showing me the way of obedience through Jesus’ example. Lord Jesus, I set my heart to obey You and die to whatever I need to sacrifice so that salvation can be fully experienced in my life and through my life to others. I am humbled to know that You want to use my life to bring others to You and to the gift of salvation. Help me to live for you today so that I can be a blessing to others and lead them to knowing You and the gift of eternal life.
