Take Time to Hear His Voice
Pastor Dan Johnson

Scripture

As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Observation

This story in the life of Jesus illustrates the importance of taking the time to sit at the feet of Jesus every day and allow Him to speak to us. By nature and personality there are many who are like Martha and others who are like Mary. But the truth is that we all need to take time each day, whether morning or night to hear the Lord Jesus speak to us in quiet moments.

Life can get so busy and noisy and its easy for all of us to be always plugged in, online, or viewing something on computer or TV. There is a gentle but persistent call for us to draw near to our Lord and Savior to listen to His voice and respond in obedience. Every morning, there is an opportunity for us to be with our Lord and He will be faithful to speak to us words of direction, encouragement and affirmation. And we all need to hear those words every day of our lives.

Application

This section of scripture encourages me today to take time to hear Jesus speak to me. I know He loves me and wants to encourage me in these days. As I quiet my heart and listen for His voice, He will be faithful to affirm my calling, give me direction for this day, and reassure me of His working in my life.

I realize that the busyness of life can so easily crowd out the time I need to take in His presence, and I am finding myself making a renewed commitment to read His Word each morning and take the time to listen for His voice. As I do that, He will be faithful to guide me in ways that I know will bring lasting fruitfulness and blessing in my life.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, I come to You this day and offer my heart and life to You. Come Lord Jesus and fill me with your love and your Spirit. I choose to spend time in your presence in these moments early in this day. Help me to live for you wholeheartedly and give me opportunities to make a difference in the lives of people through my life. Help me to hear your voice clearly this day so that I can follow You fully.
